Strategic foresight, being an essential skill (not solely a tool or method), can be applied in a variety of ways and at any stage of defense policy planning. Strategic foresight offers useful ways to approach the world of today and tomorrow with greater wisdom and better judgment. However, it cannot predict, plan, or prepare -or claim to. In fact, its main role is to make a virtue of what we don’t know, giving us greater awareness and the ability to act. Several experts and organizations have suggested some key activities and practices that can be used to implement strategic foresight. All suggestions have a unique fact in common: What matters is not which future will become reality, but which futures we can learn from. Accordingly, this book examines strategic foresight in defense management from different points of view and seeks to reveal what we can learn from potential futures.
